How good is AI at telling jokes?
A recent study by Google DeepMind highlights the limitations of artificial intelligence in generating comedy, cementing (at least for now) that jokes are a deeply human endeavor.
The research involved 20 professional comedians collaborating with AI models like ChatGPT-3.5, ChatGPT-4, and Google Bard to create comedic material during a 45-minute session. The findings revealed that while AI can assist in structuring jokes, its humor falls short with one comedian likening them to "cruise ship comedy from the '50s, just a tad less racist".
Humor requires "frame-shifting" between different contexts and perspectives, a skill that top comedians are exceptionally good at.
As a result, the researchers suggest a new benchmark for AI intelligence: the "Seinfeld test," where AI would need to entertain a discerning New York audience at an open mic.
Will we see an AI be ready to step up?
